The problems every laptop built-in microphone has

A laptop's built-in microphone is not a bad microphone. It is a reasonable microphone in a compromised position: bolted inside a hot plastic and metal box, usually within a few centimetres of a cooling fan, often under or beside a keyboard people type on, frequently aimed at a ceiling or a desk rather than a face, and on most designs sitting close to the speakers that are playing the other person's voice. Every complaint in this article comes from that placement rather than from the component.

The result on a video chat is specific and consistent: people hear you as distant, hollow and a bit noisy, or they hear a strange pumping where your voice fades in and out, or they hear themselves echoing back. None of it means you need to buy anything. Nine of the ten steps below cost nothing and most take under a minute.

Work through them in order if you can. The first three are diagnosis, and they come first because there is no point adjusting your seating position if the browser is sending audio from a device that is not even in the room.

1Confirm the microphone is actually the problem

Before changing a single setting, establish whether you are being heard at all. The fastest test on a video chat is to open a match and ask directly in the first few seconds — "can you hear me?" — and watch for a nod rather than waiting for a reply you might not hear. Try it with two or three different people. If nobody hears you, it is your capture chain. If some hear you clearly and others do not, it is a network or device problem on one side rather than a broken microphone.

Why this happens: Silent audio and disinterest look identical from the other end, so people spend entire evenings concluding that strangers are rude when their microphone was never being picked up. Two minutes of testing decides which article you should be reading.

2Check that the browser has permission and knows it

A video match asks for camera and microphone access through a permission sheet, and the request only appears when the app actually tries to open the devices. If you never saw a prompt, look at the padlock or the site information icon in the address bar and check the microphone entry there. Set it to allow, then reload the page so the site can ask again cleanly.

Why this happens: Permission state is per site and sticky, so a decision you made weeks ago on a different visit is still in force today. It is also the one failure that produces no error and no prompt at all, which makes it the most commonly missed cause of complete silence. Worth knowing: the prompt is usually raised only at the moment a page actually opens the devices, so changing a setting on its own tends not to produce one — set it in the address-bar menu, then reload the page.

3Pick the right input, because your laptop has several

Open the site settings for the page and look at which microphone is selected. A typical laptop offers more than one entry: the internal array, a headset if one is plugged in, a webcam microphone, a monitor or dock, and sometimes a virtual device installed by conferencing software. Choose the one you are actually speaking into. If the names are meaningless, unplug everything except what you want to use and try again with a short list.

Why this happens: Browsers follow a default that moves whenever hardware is connected, so the selected input can change without you touching anything. Monitors are the classic offender because many are listed as having a microphone that either does not exist or is on the far side of the desk.

4Close whatever else is holding the microphone

Quit other applications that capture audio — conferencing apps, voice chat clients, streaming or recording software, and any browser tab already in a call. Quit them properly rather than minimising, since several keep the device open while sitting in the tray. Then reload the page so the site can acquire the device from a clean state.

Why this happens: Depending on the platform and the application, a microphone already in use can be handed over degraded or not handed over at all, and the symptom is usually silence or very quiet audio rather than a clear error. Because the other application is often idle and invisible, this is easy to overlook.

5Find where the microphone physically is, then aim at it

Look for one or more pinholes on your machine — typically along the top edge of the screen bezel next to the camera, on the hinge, on the side edge, or underneath near the front lip on older models. Once you know which, adjust so it has a direct path to your mouth. Raising the laptop so the screen is closer to eye level does this almost automatically, and it improves the camera angle at the same time.

Why this happens: Built-in microphones face a direction, and on many laptops that direction is up at the ceiling or down at the desk rather than at you. A microphone aimed away from your mouth picks up more reflected sound than direct sound, which is exactly what produces the hollow, far-away quality people describe. Halving the distance between your mouth and the holes makes a far larger difference to how present you sound than any setting in any menu, and it is the one improvement available on a machine you already own.

6Stop the laptop from recording its own body

Two noises come from the chassis itself. The first is the cooling fan, which spins up during video calls because encoding video is demanding, and which sits centimetres from the microphone. Move the machine onto a hard surface rather than a bed or a lap so its vents are clear, and it will run cooler and quieter. The second is the keyboard and the palm rest: typing, tapping and even resting your wrists transmit straight through the case into the microphone as thumps.

Why this happens: This is conducted noise rather than airborne noise — it reaches the microphone through the metal it is mounted in, so it arrives much louder than its actual volume in the room suggests. It is also constant, which is why noise suppression tends to make your voice sound processed rather than removing it. The giveaway is that you cannot hear the problem yourself: the fan is behind the screen and your own typing is normal to you, so this is the fault most likely to persist for months without the owner ever knowing.

7Break the speaker-to-microphone loop

On a laptop, the speakers and the microphone are a few centimetres apart in the same shell, so the other person's voice comes out of your speakers and goes straight back into your microphone. They then hear themselves a moment later. Plug in any headphones or a headset — wired ones work instantly and cost nothing if you already own a pair. Failing that, drop your output volume substantially and angle the laptop so the speakers are not firing directly past the microphone holes.

Why this happens: This is a physical feedback path inside the machine, not a room acoustics issue, so nothing about the room you are sitting in will fix it. Echo cancellation exists and works reasonably well, but it is fighting a loop measured in centimetres, and it degrades your own voice while doing so.

8Work with automatic gain instead of against it

Laptops apply automatic gain control, which continuously raises the level when you are quiet and lowers it when you are loud. Give it as little to do as possible: keep a roughly constant distance from the machine, do not lean in and out while talking, and avoid sudden volume swings. If your voice seems to fade in and out or the background noise rises whenever you stop talking, that is gain control chasing you.

Why this happens: Automatic gain is tuned for conference calls in quiet offices, and it interprets a pause as a signal to amplify. On a video chat that means every gap in conversation gets filled with amplified room noise, and every laugh gets flattened — a steadier position is all it takes to keep it settled.

9Watch what a Bluetooth headset does to the audio

Wireless earbuds and headsets have two modes: a high-quality listening mode with no microphone, and a much lower-quality two-way mode used when the microphone is active. The moment a call starts, the device switches to the second one, and the audio quality of everything drops noticeably. If your music suddenly sounds thin when a match connects, that is the switch happening. Wired headphones avoid the tradeoff entirely; the other way around it is to select a different microphone while still using the wireless set for listening.

Why this happens: The two-way profile was designed for phone calls and prioritises latency and bandwidth over fidelity, so it sounds worse than the laptop's own microphone in many cases. People frequently switch to earbuds to fix an audio problem and make it worse, then blame the laptop.

10Use the in-call mute deliberately

During a call you can mute and unmute your own microphone from the in-call controls, alongside the camera button. Use it on purpose: mute before a coughing fit, before typing something, or when a housemate walks in, and unmute afterwards. If you mute for more than a few seconds, say so first — a silent participant looks the same as a disconnected one, and the other person cannot tell which.

Why this happens: Mute is the one audio control that is instant, reversible and entirely within your grasp mid-conversation, and using it deliberately prevents most of the noises that would otherwise send people looking through settings. Announcing it matters because the alternative reads as someone having left.

Symptom to cause, at a glance

If you would rather jump straight to the relevant step, match what people tell you against this list:

  • Nobody hears you at all. Permission or input selection — steps two and three. Do not touch anything physical until those are eliminated.
  • You sound distant, hollow or as if you are in a tunnel. The microphone is aimed away from you and hearing reflections instead of your voice — step five.
  • They hear themselves a moment after speaking. Your speakers are feeding your microphone — step seven. This one is never their fault and never fixable on their end.
  • A constant hiss, whir or rumble underneath you. Fan noise or contact noise coming through the chassis — step six.
  • Your voice swells and fades, and the room noise rises when you stop talking. Automatic gain control doing its job — step eight.
  • Everything sounded fine, then got thin the moment the call connected. A wireless headset switching into its two-way mode — step nine.
  • Chopped, robotic or delayed fragments. Not a microphone problem at all. That is the network, and no amount of audio configuration will address it.

The two-minute version

If you only do three things: put on any wired headset so the microphone leaves the laptop chassis entirely, check that the browser is set to the input you think it is, and stop resting your wrists on the palm rest while you talk. Those three cover a large share of what people report — the feedback loop, the wrong device, and the low rumble that makes a voice sound muddy. Everything else on the list is refinement.

Where people get stuck

  • "It works in the system sound test but not in the browser." These are two separate settings. The operating system has a default input and the browser has its own per-site input selection, and they do not have to agree. Fix it in the browser's site settings, not in the system panel.
  • "It worked yesterday and now it does not." Almost always a device change. Plugging in a monitor, a dock or a headset can silently move the default input to that device's microphone — including monitors whose microphone does not physically exist. Check which input is selected before assuming the laptop broke overnight.
  • "I clicked block on the permission prompt and now nothing appears at all." That is expected behaviour rather than a fault. Once a site is hard-denied, the browser stops asking and the request fails silently, so no prompt will ever appear again until you clear it. Open the site settings from the padlock or the address bar and set the microphone back to ask or allow. On an iPhone or iPad it lives in the system Settings app, and you have to reload the page afterwards for it to take effect.
  • "People say I sound like I am in a tunnel." That is the sound of a microphone hearing your voice bounce off the lid and the desk instead of hearing it directly. Raising the laptop and speaking slightly across it rather than down into it makes more difference than any software setting.
  • "Everyone skips me in the first few seconds." Rule out audio before drawing any conclusion about people. A microphone sending nothing is indistinguishable from an empty chair, and it is one of the most common invisible causes of instant exits — the other tells are covered in reading whether someone wants to keep talking.
  • "I would rather not be on camera while I sort this out." Reasonable. From the in-call controls the microphone button mutes your own microphone, and the camera button covers your video at both ends — it hides the picture rather than switching the camera off. On a phone you can also flip to the rear camera once you are in a call. Either way you can keep talking while you fix the other half.

When the microphone is not the problem at all

Two cases worth ruling out before you spend an evening on this. The first is bandwidth: audio that breaks into fragments, robotic clipping or delayed bursts is usually a network symptom, not a microphone one, because a struggling connection drops audio packets regardless of what captured them. The second is the person on the other end — you cannot fix their speakers from here, and a couple of matches with different people will tell you which side owns the problem.

If your audio is clean and conversations still stall, the issue has moved from hardware to something else. One wrong turn available at exactly this point is the assumption that everyone on the other side is a bot; picking a room before matching is usually the more productive move.
